BlackWing to Judge World’s Most Respected Direct Marketing Competition.

Jonathan Butts
President and Executive Creative Director

Launched nearly 90 years ago, the DMA International ECHO Awards is one of the most prestigious competitions in direct marketing. As BlackWing’s Executive Creative Director, I’m honored once again to participate as an ECHO judge for the DMA.

Winning an ECHO ain’t easy. Nor should it be.

This competition receives thousands of entries from around the globe. And competition for a coveted ECHO trophy is becoming increasingly fierce every year. In just the past few years, contest submissions from outside of the US have grown by 65%. And applications to participate on the judging panel have increased by an astounding 95%.

In addition to standard Gold, Silver and Bronze awards, this competition has several specialty awards.

The prestigious Diamond Award recognizes and honors the one campaign that represents the highest standards of strategic and creative excellence combined with in-market performance.

And the United States Postal Service Gold Mailbox Award recognizes the most innovative use of mail – whether as a solo effort or a major component of an integrated campaign.

ECHO Award winners will be announced at the annual DMA &THEN convention in Las Vegas, October 9th.

Research Shows Creativity is More Critical Than Ever.

Spike
Chairman of the Board

A recent global survey conducted by Adobe corporation reveals that professionals believe creativity is a powerful force. In business. In government and schools. And in society. Yet the vast majority of those surveyed felt that they — and their companies — are not living up to their creative potential.

The research also reveals that creativity pays. Based upon reported household income, creators earn 13% more than non-creators. Creativity also pays dividends for business, with those surveyed saying that investing in creativity increases employee productivity, improves customer satisfaction and boosts profitability.

Fingers crossed that my British slang is spot-on. I’m honored to be participating as a judge for the legendary International Caples Awards this May in lovely London.

This is a chance for myself, and indirectly for our agency and our clients, to be exposed to the best direct response creative work from around the world.

Caples affords a tremendous opportunity to work with top creative directors from a panoply of countries and cultures. This spring we will analyze, debate and ultimately reward the most courageous, ingenious and artfully crafted creative marketing in our industry.

About The Awards
The International Caples Awards is the only direct response and digital competition for creatives that’s judged exclusively by creative directors. The competition was founded in 1978 by Andi Emerson in honor of famed BBDO direct marketing copywriter John Caples.

Sneak peek: Amazon Spheres and the future of retail.

2018 has barely started and Amazon has already opened two new experiences in downtown Seattle: the Seattle Spheres and the Amazon Go store. Since our BlackWing Creative HQ is just 5 blocks away, and since we are insatiable tech researchers, we popped over to see what our friends at Amazon are up to now.

Our first stop was the Seattle Spheres and the Understory. The facility contains a high-tech visitor center full of large vertical screens showing photos of plants and the different spaces within the spheres above.

Next stop was “the future of retail,” the Amazon Go store — the first cashier-free store on Earth. When entering the store, you feel like you’re walking into a subway station as you stroll through turnstiles and scan your smartphone using the Amazon Go app. Once inside, the store is very similar to a high-end corner market. You can buy everything from prepared food, like salads and sandwiches, to Pop Tarts and even craft beer.

When you look up, you can see hundreds of cameras watching you. These cameras track your every move and know exactly which items you’ve put into your bag. We shopped for about 10 minutes, then exited the store through the turnstiles. No checkout line and no checkout. In about 5-minutes, we received notifications on our phones confirming our purchases and our credit card charges. No mistakes! We were quite impressed.

Enjoy our video and snapshots from our field trip to the downtown Seattle Amazon jungle.

Who Will Score a Coveted Mobius Award?

Spike
Chairman of the Board

BlackWing is proud to announce that Executive Creative Director Jonathan Butts will assist in judging the 2018 Mobius Awards.

Thousands of entries from over 20 countries have been evaluated, and winners will be announced in early 2018 — see past Mobius winners here.

The prestigious jury panel is comprised of creative leaders from countries around the world, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, Italy, UAE, Peru, Poland and Pakistan.

About the Awards.

Mobius Awards was established in 1971 in Chicago as part of the U.S. Television and Radio Commercials Festival.

Mobius Awards takes its name from the Mobius strip, a strip of paper that when twisted once and joined at the ends presents a single edge and a single face reversing themselves and continuing indefinitely. Thus, the Mobius Statuette is a three-dimensional version of a Mobius strip.

BlackWing On Hand as a New Era Begins for Alaska Air Cargo.

Charlie Worcester
Associate Creative Director

Alaska Airlines and Alaska Air Cargo are rock stars in the state of Alaska. The airline’s commitment to the communities and industries of Alaska is legendary. And now, Alaska Air Cargo is poised to take a big leap forward.

At a special ceremony earlier this month in Anchorage, the Cargo team introduced its new 737-700 freighter, the first of three all-cargo aircraft for Alaska. The new planes can hold up to 42,000 lbs of cargo and will dramatically increase the capacity Alaska can offer its customers in the state of Alaska and the lower 48. Members of the BlackWing team were there on launch day to get a first hand look at the aircraft and help celebrate its arrival.

Throughout the year, BlackWing developed promotional campaign materials, including print and digital ads, sales collateral and a unique direct mail piece– all in anticipation of the new freighter. Finally getting to see and tour it was a truly rewarding experience for our team. It was a big day for Alaska Air Cargo, and BlackWing was honored to be there.
